Write my essay about myself. It seems to be an easy thing to do. After all, you know the area under discussion. The risk is that talking about yourself can be tiresome. The trick to writing a good personal essay about yourself is to suggest something to the reader--a lesson, a piece of information, even just the pleasure of being able to understand something about another personality. This "take away" is what will help you form and write your essay in a way that will make it appealing and helpful for your reader.

1. Find out what you want a reader to conclude from reading this essay, such as a sober life
lesson or an entertaining anecdote. Write your purpose at the top of the page. Keep it
brief and simple.

2. Put down the points you want to make, facts you want to include, references, short
stories, details and so on.

3. Place the points and supporting material in a sensible order.

4. Scrutinize your material. If something doesn't support the objective you wrote at the top
of the page, remove it.

5. Put a thesis statement in writing; give explanation of the point of your essay in one
sentence, as you would tell the reader.

Write the Essay

1. Follow your outline and write the main part of your essay. Start with the second part
if you are not sure how you want to commence the essay.

2. Write an introduction. Some tried-and-true introductions contain anecdotes, a
description of a landscape, a concise account or a common observation.

3. Write an ending. Your essay might lend itself logically to "book-ending" (referring to
the foreword in the conclusion), but you don't need to reiterate your case. If you end
your essay in a much different place from where you started, an image or a wrapping-
up sentence or two could work best.

Finishing Touches

1. Scan your essay and make sure it conveys the message you set out to tell and reaches
your goal. If anything seems irrelevant or meandering, delete or amend it.

2. Read your article out loud to help with the flow of your words and identify any
flawed extracts.

3. Make sure to proofread your essay for basic spelling, punctuation, absent words,
capitalization and any other technicalities.

Tips & Warnings

• Go for strong, action verbs instead of "to be" verbs. Stay away from a passive voice.

• Vary statement lengths and structures. Keep paragraphs from being too long. Three to
five sentences would be a safe guideline.

• It's usually normal to use the first person in a personal essay; nevertheless a teacher might
ask you not to for a particular assignment.

• If feasible, ask someone else to examine the article and tell you if she took away the
message you were trying to pass along. Feedback is always helpful.
